Maggie is a great cow and good mother. She raised a bull calf for us in 2021 and he is gentle, sweet, and curious. Maggie is a well proven cow that has calved multiple times throughout her life and will continue to do so. She is docile and gentle around adults and children. She would make a good candidate for a family milk cow. She is trained to a single hot wire and is part of our rotational grazing program. 100% grass fed, no chemicals of any kind.
Rotational Program
We purchased our Dexters specifically for their size, demeanor, and efficiency on grass. We practice frequent rotational grazing which keeps our herd on clean fresh grass at all times, so we have no need for dewormers or vaccines. In this program, our Dexters helping us improve our pasture soils by intense grazing activity followed by long periods of rest. We do not use any chemicals (fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, etc…) in our pastures whatsoever. Our Dexter herd stomps the weeds down and provides our pasture with some of the best fertilizer you can find.
Our Dexters are 100% pasture grass fed. In the winter months we supplement with organic alfalfa pellets as needed. Our Dexters have remained very healthy and strong as part of this program.
Demeanor
All of our Dexters are very sweet, they love to be scratched, and will eat out of your hand. We have even tried to milk them a little without a halter and they stood still for us without a fuss. I’m sure it would be very easy to train them for milking.
We spend time with our herd and work with new timid ones to help build their trust so all of our Dexters are docile, approachable, and love attention.
